Fiscal Lab Notes is the official Substack for the Fiscal Lab on Capitol Hill.

The Fiscal Lab is devoted to supporting Members of the House and Senate with state-of-the-art analysis whenever they advance good fiscal ideas. We live in a time of rolling, seemingly continuous fiscal crises. We pledge that, within our means, no good idea to lessen fiscal stress that also sustains economic growth will wither for lack of analytical attention.

The Lab is a place for policy experimentation and policy debate. No part of the federal policy portfolio is too sacred or too risky to be exempt from edgy and responsible experimentation. Indeed, we are in the fiscal troubles of today—from trillion-dollar deficits to skyrocketing interest payments on the national debt—because we’ve been too cautious, too timid, and, thus, too willing to let the next generation solve what we should have addressed long ago. Well, the next generation is finally here, and the “third rail of public policy,” that collection of broken but sacred policies, will get lots of analytical attention at the Fiscal Lab.
